Welcome, Parents! My name is Alexa Zimmerman and I am the general music teacher for Samuel Mickle. This is my third year in the district and I love everything about my job! For the entire four years, students will experience a music education that is aligned to the national standards for general music. This website is designed to help you stay informed about what is happening in general music and chorus at school.
Zoltan Kodaly once said, "Teach music and singing at school in such a way that it is not a torture, but a joy for the pupil; instill a thirst for finer music in him/her, a thirst which will last a life time... Often a single experience will open the young soul to music for a whole lifetime. This experience cannot be left to chance; it is the duty of the school to provide it." It is my firm belief that music should be taught joyfully, but with high expectations. Just as students can achieve literacy in general education, they should be able to achieve literacy in music education. In my classroom, students will often sing, dance, compose, improvise, play instruments, read music, reflect, and move, all while experiencing the joy of music. It is my goal to offer students a general music program that encompasses music literacy, appreciation, music theory, and history. I strive for every student to have an enriched, yet enjoyable music education.
Each grade level focuses on different skills that will spiral and be built upon each year. In 3rd and 4th grade students will learn about simple rhythms, vocal pitches, music theory, musical form, timbres and expressions in music. They will learn about music from various cultures, sing songs, dance and play rhythm instruments from around the world. Students in 4th grade will begin to play recorders and develop a vocal technique for choral singing. In 5th and 6th grade students will learn about music in the world and focus on how to utilize their previously taught skills. Students will learn about and explore various genres, styles, and types of music from different time periods and from all around the world. Units may be focused on the roots of American music and creating/composing music using musical techniques from the perspective countries/cultures of their grade level units.
All students will receive detailed information about any projects far before they are due. Please check the "Classroom Expectations" sub-tab for a more detailed explanation on grading.
